Due to the rising incidence of robberies and killings perpetrated by suspects using motor vehicles with no license plates, the Traffic Management Group (TMG) will intensify its campaign against vehicles with no plates, plates with unauthorized covers, fake and stolen plates and unauthorized and expired plates.
“We believe that our campaign against vehicles violating the ‘no plate, no travel’ policy and other violations against the use of plates as provided for by Republic Act 4136, could somehow prevent the occurrence of robberies in banks and other establishments, against motorists or individuals,” TMG director Chief Superintendent Perfecto Palad said.
The latest incident on record is the robbery of the RCBC Branch in Cabuyao, Laguna where nine bank employees and a depositor were killed.
“We have done this before,” Palad said, citing an incident a few years ago when the TMG foiled a bank robbery in the Makati commercial district. He said a TMG crew were patrolling the streets of Makati City when they spotted a group of armed men in a Mitsubishi Adventure with fake plates pass the corner of EDSA and Kalayaan Avenue.
After a brief chase, the suspects fired at the pursuing TMG police officers and abandoned the Mitsubishi Adventure, which yielded two empty duffle bags and two big nylon plastic bags, Palad said.
He said the TMG’s implementation of the “no plate, no travel” policy nationwide is a continuing process.
Palad reported that since January, the TMG has apprehended 11,947 motor vehicles with no plates; 1,158 with tinted or colored plate covers; 38 with fake license plates and 146 with unauthorized or expired commemorative plates.
In Metro Manila, the TMG has already apprehended 59 motor vehicles without plate numbers since May 19 alone.
The TMG will also go after motorcycle riders without helmets and those whose back riders are also not wearing one. Palad warned that military or police personnel are not exempted from the campaign.
He appealed to motorcyclists to wear helmets and owners of brand-new vehicles not to use them if the vehicle does not yet have license plates.
