Police arrested Monday a 33-year-old jobless man hours after the discovery of the body of a septuagenarian, who was stabbed dead inside a condominium unit in Pasig City.
Eastern Police District (EPD) director Chief Superintendent Leon Nilo de la Cruz said the suspect, Eddie Perona, of No. 2487-A La Consolacion street, Guadalupe, Makati City was initially invited for questioning with regards to the killing of Belen Quintos, 73.
De la Cruz said Senior Superintendent Francisco Uyami Jr., Pasig City police chief placed Perona under arrest after several witnesses claimed seeing him in the crime scene before the discovery of Quintos body.
The EPD director said the victim is against the relationship of Perona and her son, Gregorio Quintos, 30, an accountant.
Police said the young Quintos admitted he is gay. But Perona denied having a hand in the murder of the elder Quintos.
It was Gregorio who discovered the lifeless body of his mother inside the comfort room of their condo unit located at unit 301 Tower G, Hampton Garden Condominium at C. Raymundo Avenue, Barangay Maybunga when he arrived home from work at about 8:30 p.m.
De la Cruz said the victim was stabbed four times in the neck and once in the forehead. Police probers said the victim must have been dragged from the living room to the comfort room. “One of her earrings was found in the living room and the other at the crime scene,” said De la Cruz.
Senior Inspector Marilene Lopez, of the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) said that the victim died due to the multiple stab wounds in different parts of her body, especially on her neck.
“She was repeatedly stabbed in the neck apparently to finish her off,” said Lopez.
Police said Gregorio summoned Perona, who arrived at the crime scene three hours later. Uyami directed his men to place Perona under arrest after witnesses claimed that he has an ax to grind against the victim, who is against his relationship with Gregorio.
The Pasig City police have in their custody witnesses Jefferson Salita Quintos, 19, stay-in cashier, and Ma. Ronda Rayos, 21, single, of Sixto Laundry, 98-Sixto Avenue, Barangay Maybunga also testified that they saw Perona in the vicinity of the condominium around 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday.
“Mukhang nagmamadali siya,” said Jefferson. Gregorio admitted he and Perona lived in one room for at least two years before they separated because of the insistence of his mother.
The Quintos family transferred to the condo unit four months ago on the decision of the victim to keep Gregorio away from Perona.
Gregorio also told police investigators that Perona once confided to him, “Kapag nawala na ang nanay mo baka magsama uli tayo.”
Since transferring to the condo unit, the victim would leave the door open because of the intense summer heat.
“She would stay by the door. She is friendly to the whole neighborhood,” said a neighbor. The condominium is also heavily guarded, with security guards recording the names of all visitors of the tenants, and the purpose of their visit.
Police failed to recover the fan knife used in the murder of the elder Quintos. Perona is presently detained at the Pasig City police station as murder charges are being prepared against him.
